The Wellsville Historical Society was established in 2007 by the banker, the wife of the current mayor, and other townspeople who decided it would be best to create a museum that would display the history of the city. Wellsville is located in northeastern Kansas, less than two miles southwest of the four corners of Franklin, Miami, Johnson, and Douglas Counties and less than 20 miles southwest of the Kansas City area. Wellsville was incorporated as a city in Franklin County on June 19, 1884; however, Wellsville traces its history to the 1860s.
The Wellsville Historical Society, Inc., a not-for-profit organization registered with the State of Kansas and the Internal Revenue Service (Section 501(c)(3), was created with the following mission:
• To Preserve the Rich History of the Area through the Collection & Maintenance of Records & Artifacts through the Encouragement of
Preservation & Local Historical Research
• To Present Wellsville's History to the Public by Means of Museums, Archives, Creative & Educational Programming & Publications
• To Promote Cultural Tourism as an Effective Means of Communicating the Lessons of History to Visitors & Citizens of the Wellsville Community
